Quadmania! The New Rivian R1T Is A 10-Second Quarter Mile Pickup Truck
I spend a day at the Pacific Raceway with the new quad-motor Gen 2 Rivian R1T and R1S running 0-60 and quarter-mile times with both vehicles. The new quad-motor R1T shaved about a second off the Gen 1's quarter-mile time and can now cross the line in a blistering 10.5 seconds.

    This sounds pretty good……until the charger is fixed, but the ranking stays low until enough Rivians use it to pull the score back up and if the score is already low, most will be avoiding the repaired charger. While it’s a step in the correct direction, there should probably be a way for the score to be modified back to great as soon as the unit is fixed and confirmed working as intended. I definitely utilize ABRP and I’m happy to see Rivian making improvements to it. 👍👍

    EV sales nowhere near where they should be…. Range and comfort is way more important to prospective buyers than stupid fast acceleration….. my wife’s Range Rover V8 ONLY has 540+ hp and would get smoked by these vehicles but she won’t even discuss switching to a Rivian…. Ride quality, comfort, quietness and RANGE is far superior in the RR… it’s not even close. Sorry Rivian but when my wife wants to buy a drag racing car maybe we will look at one…. In case you missed it, RANGE and COMFORT are way more desirable in a $100k vehicle

But the look on your face as you were decompressing from that 0-60 run was priceless. I wonder when the first guy is going to pass our from the g forces mashing the accelerator on his mega-EV causes.     Not going to watch this based on title covering quarter mile times. All these 'reviews' that cover 0-60 times are just meaningless to me. I want reduced cost and better range before I'll consider these vehicles. These are pickups and cross-overs not Taycan or e-tron.

    Missing he point. 0-60 is a pretty boring thing. Stopping, turning, top speed, handling, efficiency, accessibility, affordability, maintainability, reliability. There is just soooo much more to care about than 0-60 so long as it doesn't completely fail at that too. I'm not going to watch this. It's a boring figure.

    I really don't understand the continued need to increase the speed and power of EVs. I've got an F150 Lightning and I have very little desire to floor it and dump all the horses to the road, not only for the cost of premature wear to my tires, but I'm not running on a track or drag strip and have no need to go that fast right away. Sure it's great when on the highway to have instant access to all the power to pass a slower vehicle, but I'm sure that most EV owners would be quite satisfied with slower 0-60 times, lower torque, and greater efficiency / range.

      Agreed, this is a relic of the last decade when Tesla started this in order to get people excited for EVs when nothing else was an advantage of EVs over ICE cars at that time. Power comes very cheap and easy in an EV, just use a bigger electric motor or use mutiple of them. More thoughtful engineering is expensive, like creating a balanced chassis or a comfortable yet sporty suspension, these are actually the more important parts of a fun driving experience. Nowadays the EV technology and the ecosystem around it is more sophisticated, some EVs can compete directly on range with ICE cars and the charging speeds are much faster (at least in China...) or excel in traditional engineering like the new 800V-suspension system of the Porsche Taycan. EVs also find other ways to entertain like the simulated gear shifts in the Hyundai Ioniq 5N. A reason why the new Model 3 Performance is one hell of a boring car. It misses out on traditional engineering but also on unique EV selling points like vehicle-to-load/vehicle-to-grid charging or a frunk storage (It does have a frunk tho) or on quirky things like the simulated gear shifts. These are things why the mass market will switch to EVs, just faster acceleration isn't. I feel like this quad motor Rivian is following the old trend. Sure it is fun for some people and these people are willing to spend the money on it but it has become so normal to have an insanely quick accelerating EV that the excitement will die down after a while. BMW wants to add quad motors with 1200hp to its upcoming electric 3-series sedan, even the Rivian will feel slow then. Stupid development...but at least we know the BMW 3-series will be fun to drive at lower speeds and around corners, too.

    I would love to discuss with you the nightmare I just had driving from Texas to Mississippi with my family and back and getting stranded in my Ford Lightning with no assistance from Ford or Electrify America and a fellow veteran, who also almost got stranded with their family as well.

      Rivian's system is called Driver+. Similar to Autopilot, it's not a hands-free system, but it's not as advanced at Autopilot or FSD.

    I’ve purchased the Vortex Adapter and received it with fix. Sadly the adapter has not worked and the Tesla cable is hard to remove from the adapter. I’ve followed the instructions provided and I received a fault indicator error 😢bye bye $200

    A person has free charging AND L2 at home which costs money to use. Sorry but money rules…that’s basic human nature in a capitalist society. People will use the free charging over opening their wallet. Those who don’t are saints and will go to heaven. The onus is on the companies providing free charging not the owners. A couple of minor points. For the ID.4 it’s not literally unlimited. It’s limited to 30 minute sessions. After 30 minutes it costs money. Also for 2024 VW has ceased the multi-year no cost charging program.

    i really like the old gen1 volt telling me exactly how many kw's are going where. helps me drive more efficiently up hills where i can keep a steady input power while letting my speed sag by 5-10 mph. getting 5miles/kwh on the hwy at 60-65mph, crazy

    Well this convinced me that I can not have an EV without a major upgrade to my electrical service. I have an electric stove, electric dryer, air conditioner, etc. I only have a 100 amp service. Probably only have around 30 amps to send to a car charger.

    Good topic: its ridiculous the poor management of EV fast charges by anyone except for tesla. Poor reliability, maintenance, and information. Disappointing but not surprising that the traditional OEMs haven't stepped up to this, and huge kudos for Tesla doing it right even when no one else knew how.

We recently leased an Ionic 5 and would like to purchase an adapter that will work with that device. Most adapters are for super chargers. Can you provide some direction?

    I purchased the J1772 version based on Tom's recommendation. It's been great, thank you. I also got a separate connector holster from Grizzl-E as they're not too far from me because I also hated the included holder. A question, will Emporia owners be able to directly replace an existing J1772 cable with a NACS cable? I had an electrician hardwire my unit with a dedicated copper cable and a 60A breaker and the connector blocks for the vehicle cable seem pretty similar. This leads me to wonder if swapping between J1772 and NACS cables is possible.

    @Tom Do you have any plans to review Tesla/NACS or J1772 extension cords such as those offered by Lectron? These extend on the car side of the EVSE rather than the wall side of the EVSE. Seem like a better solution for those of use that travel to destinations with home outlets in odd places.

    They need to include better facility info. I found a fast charger but no bathroom or other facility nearby. Also, better planning. I found 4 dual fast chargers (8 css1 cables) but only 4 parking spots. Hidden from the road in a hotel back yard.

    I use ABRASION for my e-Golf, but not with the XC40 Recharge and i4 as they have good built in navigation.
